Before your child’s first visit

We want your child’s first visit with us to be a positive one! This visit will set the tone for many visits to come. But, we need your help! Let your child know that they will be coming to the dentist, which is a person that helps their teeth stay happy and healthy! Please avoid using any negative terms such as hurt, needle, shot, etc. as we never use words like these in our office. Never relay any kind of dental fears you may have, as this may lead to unnecessary anxiety for your child. Your child will be introduced to our office and instruments in a fun, non-threatening manner!

Our office also enjoys scheduling HAPPY VISITS, which is a time for your child to come in before their first visit. This serves as an opportunity for your child to meet the staff and Dr. Light, tour the office, and get a prize! The goal is to make your child as well as yourself feel more comfortable about the first visit!

First visit under the age of 3

Along with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, we recommend that a child’s first dental visit be scheduled by their first birthday! Although this visit involves little treatment, it gives your child an opportunity to be introduced to the dentist, dental office, and appropriate hygiene practices.

Most importantly, parents are equipped with prevention tips, diet and hygiene advice, and dental development information at this visit. Your child may not be ready to sit in our “big kid” chair quite yet….no worries!  Usually at this age, a lap exam is performed with the parent while Dr. Light evaluates your child’s gums, teeth, and oral development. A toothbrush cleaning is usually performed to remove plaque and to demonstrate to parents the proper way of brushing. A fluoride vitamin treatment can also be applied to your child’s teeth to help strengthen them against cavities.

Please don’t be afraid of how your child will act during these early visits! We will do our best best to make your child happy and comfortable!

First Visit 3 years and older

It is never too late to start seeing the dentist! Your child will likely be ready for the “big kid” chair, but we will still review all instruments and go over each step of the visit.

During this appointment, necessary x-rays may be obtained, and Dr. Light will examine your child’s teeth, gums, and bite. Your child’s teeth will be cleaned, polished, and flossed and a topical fluoride treatment will be applied. Age appropriate oral hygiene instructions will be reviewed with you and your child so that your child’s oral health will be optimized in between dental visits!
